Printing and mounting your court QR codes

Where to put the code on each court, and what to do when one stops scanning.

Overview

Every court has its own QR code. It is the only way a player reaches your court in SportsCast, so where you put it and how well it is printed decide whether anyone streams at all.

Each code belongs to one court. They are not interchangeable — a code from Court 1 mounted on Court 2 will charge Court 2's players to Court 1 and make your dashboard wrong.

Printing

StatsCentral gives you the signage as a PDF, either one court at a time or every court at your venue in a single file.

  • Print at 100%. Do not let the printer scale to fit. The code is sized so that a phone can read it from a normal standing distance, and shrinking it takes that away.
  • Print in black on white. Coloured or inverted codes scan far less reliably.
  • Keep the white border. The empty margin around the code is part of it. Cropping right to the edge of the pattern is one of the most common reasons a code stops working.
  • Laminate, or print on something that survives a gym. Sweat, cleaning spray and tape all shorten a paper sign's life.

Where to mount it

  • At eye level, roughly 1.4 to 1.6 metres from the floor. A player holds their phone up, not down.
  • At the end of the court players walk in from, so they pass it on the way to the first game rather than having to go looking.
  • Out of the run of play. Behind the baseline on a wall or a post, never on the floor and never somewhere a ball or a sliding player will reach.
  • Where the light is even. A code under a spotlight or behind glass gets a glare patch across it that phones cannot read through.

Put one on each end of a long court if you have the signage. Players should never have to cross the court to scan.

When you rename or move a court

Tell StatsCentral, and we will reissue the code. The name printed on the sign has to match the name the player sees when they scan, or they will assume they have scanned the wrong court and stop.

When a code stops working

A code that has been reissued stops working the moment the new one is created. This is deliberate: it means a code someone photographed, screenshotted or copied last season cannot be used to stream on your court forever.

If a player tells you a code is not scanning, see When a code will not scan before reprinting anything — most of the time the code is fine and something else is wrong.

Replacing a damaged sign

Ask StatsCentral for fresh signage for that court. Do not photocopy an existing sign: a copy of a copy loses the contrast the pattern depends on, and it will scan for some phones and not others, which is worse than not working at all.
